The exam: format, procedure and deadlines

How many questions does the Permiso B theory exam have?

30 multiple-choice questions, each with three answer options. The DGT describes the test this way, and the General Drivers Regulation sets the common knowledge test at a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 50 questions.

Source: DGT, BOE

How long is the driving theory exam?

The regulation allows 1 minute per question, so with 30 questions the exam lasts 30 minutes. The time can be extended, for example when videos precede the questions or for duly justified special needs.

Source: BOE

How many mistakes are allowed in the DGT theory test?

Up to 3. To pass, errors cannot exceed 10 % of the questions asked; with 30 questions that is 3 errors, so at least 27 correct answers. If 10 % gave a decimal, the next whole number applies.

Source: BOE

How many correct answers does each question have?

Each question has three options. In the DGT's official simulator, which the DGT says has the same format as a real exam, only one option is correct per question.

Source: DGT, DGT

How much does the DGT theory exam cost?

Fee 2.1 is €94.05 for each licence you apply for. It covers the theory and practical tests over two sittings, the provisional authorisation and issue of the licence. It does not include what a driving school charges for tuition.

Source: DGT online office, DGT online office, DGT

How many times can I fail the theory test?

Each application gives two sittings, and normally no more than six months should pass between them except for justified reasons. If you fail twice, in the same test or in different tests, you must submit a new application and pay a new fee.

Source: BOE, DGT

How long does a passed theory test stay valid?

Two years, counted from the day after the pass. If you pass the next test within that period, the period starts again. If two years go by without getting the licence, the tests must be repeated.

Source: BOE, DGT

From what age can the theory test be taken?

The first sitting of the knowledge test can be taken up to three months before reaching the minimum age required for the licence. For permit B, the DGT notes this in its FAQ.

Source: BOE, DGT

Do I need a driving school to take the theory test?

No. The DGT processes applications to sit the theory test independently through its online office, with fee 2.1 and a psychophysical aptitude report. When you go through a driving school, the school submits the application itself.

Source: DGT online office, DGT

What do I need before applying for the exam?

A psychophysical aptitude report from an authorised Driver Assessment Centre, valid for 90 days: the application must be submitted before it expires. The fee must also be paid. The full list of requirements is on the DGT online office.

Source: DGT, DGT online office

Do I have to pass the theory test before the practical?

Yes. The tests are eliminatory: whoever does not pass the knowledge test cannot take the closed-circuit test, and whoever does not pass that cannot take the on-road test.

How to study

How should I study for the driving theory test?

A simple method: study one topic, answer questions on that topic, review your mistakes the next day and, once there is a base, practise full exams of 30 questions in 30 minutes until you stay above the 27 correct answers needed to pass.

Source: BOE, DGT

How many practice tests should I do before the exam?

There is no official number. The exam criterion is no more than 3 errors in 30 questions, so what matters is measuring your results: practise full exams until your errors drop steadily, and review each mistake with the rule that explains it.

Source: BOE

What is the DGT's official simulator?

It is a free practice exam from the DGT: no document or sign-up is needed, and you choose the type of exam and the language. It has only two or three questionnaires per type of licence, and the DGT clarifies that it is not a tool for preparing, but for getting familiar with the exam.

Source: DGT

Are the questions in practice apps the real exam questions?

The DGT does not publish its question bank: it only offers two or three model questionnaires per licence. So no website or app can guarantee its questions are the official ones. DrivingLingo's questions are original, written from the regulations, and are not endorsed by the DGT.

Source: DGT

What are the trick questions in the theory test?

They are questions whose answer depends on a nuance: a word such as only or always, a figure, or the type of road. There is no official list. To train for them, learn each rule with its scope and practise pairs of similar rules that are often confused.

Which questions are failed most often in the theory test?

We have found no official failure statistics by topic. The DGT magazine hosted a publisher's study (750,000 online tests from its platform) in which speed limits by circumstance and vehicle were among the most frequent errors. These are private-platform data, not DGT data.

Source: DGT

Is there an official manual to study from?

The DGT publishes study material and, for people with reading difficulties, it published the first Basic Manual for permit B in Easy Read format. In any case, what is examined is the regulation in force; the manual is an aid for studying it.

Source: DGT, DGT

Is there an easy-read or audio version of the exam?

The DGT application form states that the easy-read option exists for A1, A2 and B. In the DGT announcement about audio, in a first phase it was only available in tests taken in Castilian Spanish, with the intention of extending it to other languages.

Languages and foreign drivers

In which languages can the permit B theory exam be taken?

In Castilian Spanish, in the co-official languages, and in English, French or German. That is how it appears on the DGT's official application form for permits A1, A2, B and points recovery.

Source: DGT online office

Can the exam be taken in Urdu, Arabic, Hindi or Punjabi?

No. Those languages are not among the theory-test languages on the DGT's official form. You can study with help in another language, but the exam is taken in one of the permitted languages: Castilian Spanish, co-official languages, English, French or German.

Source: DGT online office

How do I request the theory exam in English?

The language is chosen when applying for the test: the official form includes the field Language of the theory test. If you go through a driving school, tell the school when it processes the application.

Source: DGT online office

Can the motorbike or lorry exam be taken in English?

According to the official form, English is available for A1, A2, B and points recovery, and also for C1, C, D1, D and their trailer classes (without German). The specific permits AM, BE, LCM and LVA are examined only in Castilian Spanish or co-official languages.

Source: DGT online office

Is the English exam the same as the Spanish exam?

The DGT does not publish the English version of its questions. Some users describe its wording as literal and sometimes odd. In DrivingLingo the English line follows a literal register and a fixed glossary of terms, but we cannot guarantee it is identical to the official one.

Source: thelocal.es

How do I study for the theory test if Spanish is not my first language?

One option is to practise in the language you will sit the exam in, Spanish or English, and rely on plain explanations of each rule. DrivingLingo lets you study in Spanish or English; there are Urdu and Arabic drafts pending native review.

Source: DGT online office

Can a foreign licence be exchanged for a Spanish one without an exam?

It depends on the country. EU and EEA licences, and licences from countries with an exchange agreement, can be exchanged; the list is on the DGT website. According to the DGT, a foreign licence is only valid for six months from taking up normal residence in Spain.
