How the B licence theory exam works

The DGT theory exam for the permiso B is a multiple-choice test that, as a general rule, is taken on a computer (Reglamento General de Conductores, art. 52). For each question you pick the answer you think is correct from those offered.

ItemWhat the source says
Number of questionsThe common test has between 30 and 50 questions under the Reglamento General de Conductores (annex VI, B). In the DGT simulator, the permiso B paper has 30.
TimeOne minute per question, extendable in justified special-needs cases (annex VI, B). With 30 questions that is 30 minutes.
Errors allowedUp to 10 % of the questions, rounded up to the next whole number (annex VI, B). With 30 questions that is 3 errors at most.
LanguagesSpanish, co-official languages, English, French and German for the permiso B (DGT application form, model 04).
How long a pass lastsTwo years (Reglamento General de Conductores, art. 53; DGT page on sitting the exam).
Fee94.05 EUR (fee 2.1), which gives you two sittings (DGT online office, checked on 11 October 2026).

Sources: Reglamento General de Conductores, BOE-A-2009-9481 (annex VI as in force since 12 November 2020), the DGT page Requisitos, preparación y presentación a examen and the exam application page on the DGT online office, which lists the fee (both in Spanish).

The DGT offers a free simulator on its website. It warns that there are very few different papers per permit type (two or three): it is for getting to know the format, not for preparing in depth. For that you need many questions and explanations.

How our exam matches the real one

The practice exam follows the shape of the paper we observed in the DGT simulator:

  • 30 questions in 30 minutes, with a maximum of 3 errors to pass.
  • Three options per question and only one correct.
  • One image per question, as in the simulator.
  • A block mix. The DGT does not publish a topic split. We measured it on three complete papers from the simulator and use that average. It is a small sample and we say so: the real split can vary by one point up or down per block.

What DrivingLingo adds is the adaptation. The number of questions per block is never touched, but inside each block the questions from what you have missed weigh more. Your results are stored on your device.

The practice exam has no sound, no mascot and no right or wrong colours per question. You see the result when you hand in. That gets you used to the calm of the real exam. If you want question-by-question feedback, use the lessons and the repair drill.

What to do after each exam

  1. Look at your errors by block and find the block where you miss most.
  2. Open the matching topic in the syllabus and read the rule and the typical mistake.
  3. Use the repair drill and try again another day.

If you are going to sit the exam in English, read how the exam works in English and what happens on exam day. The DGT has announced that the exam will include a risk-perception video; as of 11 October 2026 we have not seen a notice that it applies. If you wonder what the regulation reform in force since 1 October 2026 changed, see what changed. For procedure questions, see the FAQ.

A free driving theory test in English

If you are practising for the theory exam in Spain in English, this is how to use the test. Choose English as your exam language, so the question and the three options appear in English; the Spanish term of the law stays one tap away. Start with the 10-question sample above to see the layout, then take today's 30-question exam under the clock. The result comes at the end, not after each question, as in the real exam.

Use the test to find your weak blocks, not to collect scores. The English you practise on is our own wording, written to be literal and close to the Spanish. The DGT does not publish its English paper, so the best result of a practice test is knowing which rules you do not yet understand. Then go back to the syllabus topic for that block. If you are still working out how to get a licence in Spain at all, start with the steps to a Spanish driving licence.
